Hunkpati Investments, a Native CDFI on the Crow Creek Reservation, received a $50,000 grant from the CITI Foundation. This grant will support their credit builder program, providing lending capital for credit builder loans and financial support for Credit Builder classes and curriculum. The credit builder program provides small loans of up to $2,500 to pay off bad debt and subsequently reports a positive credit history to the credit bureaus. This, in conjunction with a credit builder classes in partnership with Lutheran Social Services Consumer Credit Counseling, poises families to dramatically improve their credit scores.
CITI Foundation’s initial investment of $25,000 made the start of the credit builder program possible, and their continued investment will allow it to continue to grow. Since its inception, the credit builder program has given out twelve loans to local individuals—empowering families to take control of their financial futures. For example, the first participant of this program, Kelly Swanson, saw her credit score improve over 100 points in just over a year, and other participants have seen similar results.
“This program makes a huge difference in the lives of struggling local families. Our clients are seeing unbelievable results through this program, and Hunkpati Investments is just humbled to be a part of that. We are so thankful for the initial and continued support of the CITI Foundation for making this program possible. ” Executive Director, Krystal Langholz, says.
