Creating Access to Fresh, Healthy Food
The Crow Creek Fresh Food Initiative was launched to help the people of the Crow Creek Reservation overcome the challenges of being located in a food desert by supporting the production of fresh produce and encouraging healthy habits. Although the initiative provides much more than fresh produce – workforce development, a farmer’s market, and food entrepreneur support, resources, and education.
The heart of the Crow Creek Fresh Food Initiative is the community garden, centrally located next to the elementary school on the Crow Creek Reservation. The community garden produces hundreds of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables that are enjoyed by community members every year. The garden also provides employment opportunities for reservation residents and helps local youth gain valuable work experience that they can take with them into adulthood. Community members are encouraged to volunteer in the community garden and to participate in the Crow Creek Fresh Food Initiative to help feed the people of Crow Creek.
The Crow Creek Fresh Food Initiative also provides support to food entrepreneurs and others who are dedicated to eating healthy throughout the reservation by providing garden kits and tilling services. Also as part of the Crow Creek Fresh Food Initiative, Hunkpati hosts a farmer’s market that features affordable produce from the community garden and accepts EBT cards to ensure low-income families have access to fresh, local food.
