Crow Creek Fresh Food Initiative

0

The Crow Creek Community Garden is back for a second year!  Thanks to continued support from First Nations Development Institute and South Dakota State University Extension, the Crow Creek Fresh Food Initiative is working to support fresh produce and healthy habits on Crow Creek.  Hunkpati Investments hired six local teenagers to help tend the garden this year, and their hard work is already bearing fruit in the form of carrots, radishes, and fresh greens.  Yum!

The community garden is located next to the elementary school and across the road from the Episcopal Church and, as always, welcomes volunteers.  This garden is yours– along with every other Crow Creek community member– so come help feed your people!

We are currently registering vendors for our first farmer’s market on Friday, July 20th.  If you have home-grown fruits and vegetables, home-baked goods, home-made candies, farm-fresh eggs, or canned goods to sell, please call Whitney at 245-2148 to get signed up.  The farmer’s market will feature affordable produce from the community garden– we accept EBT!– and all are welcome.

If you want to learn to can or preserve food for your family and neighbors, plan on joining us on July 14th for a free food preservation workshop offered by SDSU Extension.  Participants will receive a free lunch and a jar of fresh made jam or jelly to take home, so register now!

Earlier this year, the Fresh Food Initiative also partnered with National Relief Charities to distribute over 90 start-up kits with gardening tools and seeds.  Hunkpati Investments will be offering support to our new and veteran gardeners throughout the summer.  If you need help with your family’s garden, please give us a call at 245-2148 or stop by the community garden to talk with our Garden Outreach Assistant, Terry Marks.
